Freedom From Fear","type":"assigned by artist"}],"summaryDescription":"Rockwell used his neighbours in Vermont as models for four poster designs interpreting the four freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These were principles which President Roosevelt had outlined in a speech in January 1941. The aim of the posters was to inspire people through the emotionally and morally charged images of the America they were fighting for. Here he uses children to engage feelings of protection and responsibility. The posters proved so popular that the Treasury mounted a touring exhibition of the original artwork in aid of war bond sales.","physicalDescription":"This poster shows a peaceful domestic scene, rendered with Norman Rockwell's characteristic style of nearly photographic accuracy and detail. A husband and wife tuck their two children into bed. The husband stands erect, watching over the children as well as his wife, who bends over the sleeping bodies to adjust the bed linen. A soft raking light can be seen in the upper left corner. Some of the children's toys are strewn on the floor. Black text printed in the white margins above and below the image.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rockwell, Norman","id":"A13070"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"US Office of War Information","id":"A13065"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB5393"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"3G","shelf":"DR2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1943","earliest":"1943-01-01","latest":"1943-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"102.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"72.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"OURS... to fight for","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"printed in black on white across upper margin"},{"content":"FREEDOM FROM FEAR","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"printed in black on white across lower margin"},{"content":"Norman Rockwell","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"printed in dark lettering within the image's lower left corner"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Second World War poster published by the US Office of War Information (Norman Rockwell, 1943)","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Saturday Evening post cover","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"World War II","id":"V16"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"family","id":"x35402"},{"text":"children","id":"x31526"},{"text":"home","id":"AAT239112"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"war","id":"x35624"},{"text":"peace","id":"AAT260027"},{"text":"sleep","id":"x30157"},{"text":"security","id":"AAT226324"},{"text":"propaganda","id":"AAT55539"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.76-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"76","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Leslie Schreyer Loan Number","id":"THES50220"},"number":"LS.514"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
