The album also includes views of the garden, and some of the buildings within it. The paintings (subsequently bound into 2 volumes) were made by Johann Walter who visited the gardens at least eight times between 1651 and 1672. The plants included established garden favourites such as pinks and columbines, as well as more exotic species, and other plants, such as the Marvel of Peru, newly introduced to Europe from the Americas.","physicalDescription":"Album of watercolours of flowering plants, fruits etc. Also an illustration of the garden.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Walther, Johann Jakob","id":"A7542"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"vellum (paper)","id":"AAT250699"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and gouache on vellum","categories":[{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Gardens & Gardening","id":"THES49002"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GX0363","2014GX1534","2014GX1539","2006AN7431","2017JW1653","2017KB3131"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"6","id":"THES49750"},"free":"","case":"CA13","shelf":"DRAWER","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"album","id":"AAT26690"}],[{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1654-1672","earliest":"1649-01-01","latest":"1672-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"9175","id":"O74330"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"605","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"25/06/2012","earliest":"2012-06-25","latest":"2012-06-25"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"460","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"25/06/2012","earliest":"2012-06-25","latest":"2012-06-25"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Simulacrum scenographicorum celeberrimi horti itzsteniensis quem fieri fecit illustrissimus comes ac dominus, dominus Johannes Comes Nassovia et Sarapontis etc.\r\n\r\nPopulus Alcida, Platanus gratissima Xerci,\r\nRegibus Alcinoo et Cyro amor hortus erat.\r\nTantorum Heroum Comes aemulus ecce Johannes \r\nPomonam et Floram Nassoviensis amat.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Perspective views of the most famous garden of Idstein, which made very famous count Johann of Nassau-Saarbrücken (Sarapontis?)\r\n\r\n\r\nDearest was the poplar to Alcides, the plane tree to Xerxes, \r\nGarden was love to the kings Alcinous and Cyrus.\r\nEmulator of so many heroes here is count Johann \r\nof Nassau <who> loves Pomona and Flora.\r\n","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in brown ink on top and bottom"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"<font -i>Simulacrum Scenographicum Celeberrimi Horti Itzsteinensis</font -i>, album of watercolours of flowering plants, fruits etc., Johann Jakob Walter, about 1654-1672","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Christel Lentz and Martina Nath-Esser, Derschlossgartenzu Idstein (Wernersche Verlagsgesellschaft, 1990)"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["9174"],"accessionNumberNum":"9174","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LR1610","2019LV2510","2019LW1614"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-23","availableToBook":false}}
