The purpose of this poster was presumably to encourage support within America for the Belgian resistance cause. In the diagonal sweep of the composition, the image of the bound prisoners facing the German firing squad is counteracted by the avenging Belgian soldier and the thrust of the fighter aircraft. The name of the artist, R. Sturbelle, suggests he was himself Belgian.","physicalDescription":"The composition comprises a cluster of four bound prisoners in the upper left corner before a firing squad of helmeted soldiers who stand on the diagonal at the right. The central image shows three war planes flying in formation. In the lower centre, printed in full colour, is a charging soldier thrusting his bayonet, seen from above. Large red type printed across three lines: \"Belgium Fights On\".","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sturbelle, R.","id":"A13046"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Belgian Information Center, New York","id":"A13047"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB5382"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"3G","shelf":"DR7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"USA","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940-1944","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1944-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"62.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"BELGIUM/ FIGHTS/ ON","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"printed in red"},{"content":"R.
