To begin with it was indepted to the early italianate influences of Nevers but, by the end of the century, it had adapted its output to the fashion for blue and white, and developed a particular style of radiating decoration. Louis XIV's command to melt down all silver plate to pay for a series of expensive wars increased the demand from the nobility for faience. The shape of this caster directly imitates examples in silver.","physicalDescription":"Baluster-shaped body with pierced, domed cover (both parts with screw thread), painted with lambrequins and swags and with an unidentified coat of arms","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"Tin-glaze","id":"AAT233436"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware, painted in cobalt blue","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AG5969","2016JB3926","2016JB3927"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"25","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sugar sifter","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rouen","id":"x32531"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1720-1730","earliest":"1715-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"07/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-07","latest":"2016-03-07"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"10.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"07/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-07","latest":"2016-03-07"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.320","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"07/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-07","latest":"2016-03-07"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"A circle made of blue points under the cover and on the bottom of the body."}],"objectHistory":"Bought from the Aigoin Collection","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tin-glazed earthenware sugar caster, painted in cobalt blue, made at Rouen, about 1720-1730","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Acquired as Rouen, period of Louis XIV, relabelled as Rouen, early 18th century.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"lambrequins","id":"AAT203898"},{"text":"swag","id":"AAT204891"},{"text":"coat of arms","id":"AAT126352"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["428-1870"],"accessionNumberNum":"428","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1870,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2010EM0857","2019LU5772"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
