He became famous in the role of Janot in the play by Dorvigny, 'Battus paient l'amende' . [Not very tall, thin, Janot is a poor shop boy, shabbily dressed, an effect no doubt engineered with the greatest care by the actor: He wears a jacket that is too big for him with buttons, very short sleeves and deep open pockets, his breeches are unbuttoned and reveal his knees, his stockings are wrinkling down around his ankles and his flat shoes ressemble clogs.
