In 1730 the Prince de Condé, a cousin of Louis XV, gave his protection to a new enterprise at Chantilly, outside Paris. Craftsmen were lured from the rival Saint-Cloud factory and a royal privilege, granted in 1735, permitted Chantilly to produce porcelain decorated with overglaze enamel colours in the Japanese 'kakiemon' style. For a while, tin oxide was used to whiten the glaze. Later productions included a much broader range of styles and decoration, including flowers and a striking blue-lozenge ground pattern (Fig. 22-1902). The Prince de Condé was a loyal client of his own factory. An inventory of his possessions drawn up after his death in 1740 (five years after the factory was founded) includes eighty pieces in a variety of models.","physicalDescription":"Bowl of soft-paste porcelain, painted in Kakiemon style with trees and blossom.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chantilly porcelain factory","id":"A12430"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"soft paste porcelain","id":"AAT10665"},{"text":"tin glaze","id":"AAT233436"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Soft-paste porcelain, tin-glazed and painted in enamels","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kakiemon","id":"AAT18597"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AH3465","2008BT2802","2006AH3288","2018KY3893"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Chantilly","id":"x32536"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1735-1740","earliest":"1735-01-01","latest":"1740-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr Arthur Hurst","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"A hunting horn, painted in red enamel","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Octagonal bowl (mortar), soft-paste porcelain, tin-glazed and painted in enamels, made by Chantilly porcelain factory, France, 1735-1740","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers","id":"AAT132399"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.168-1940"],"accessionNumberNum":"168","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1940,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LP8243","2019LU5554","2019LW4799"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
