David Peters has suggested it was part of a group of servicewares listed in the sales of the Paris luxury goods dealer (marchand-mercier), Lazare Duvaux. In 1758 Duvaux sold varous items of this type, simply described as green, 'verd', (or variations of green) to M. de Laborde (an influential financier connected to the court), King Louis XV and the king's mistress, Madame de Pompadour. In his further investigation of the sales records, Peters suggests this rinser may have been part of a service bought by the king himself.\n\nEach diner would have had a glass rinser, filled with iced water, as part of his place setting. In her catalogue of French porcelain in the Wadsworth Athaneum, Linda Roth states 'Wine glass coolers... came into limited use in the early part of the eighteenth century, as Louis XV relaxed some of the rules of court etiquette and began hosting more intimate suppers, usualy after the hunt.' The first service made by the Vincennes/Sèvres factory for Louis XV in 1753-56 included twenty-four glass rinsers.\n\nDavid Peters. Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, (Little Berkhamsted, privately published, 2nd edition 2015, see vol 2, pp. 307-310, no. 58-1\nClare Le Corbeiller and Linda H.
